Author Q and A: Fraser Watts

November 29, 2007

In December, Templeton Foundation Press will publish Jesus and Psychology edited by Fraser Watts, director of the Psychology and Religion Research Group at the University of Cambridge.

TFP Editor: What would you like readers to take away from this book?

Watts: A fresh understanding of the personal significance of what they read in the Gospels and of the psychological processes that affect how they read them.

TFP Editor: What new contributions does this book present to both biblical studies and psychology fields?

Watts: A more specific focus on a psychological reading of the Gospels (rather than the Bible more generally); a broad approach including: the psychology of Jesus himself, the psychological significance of his teaching and personal encounters, and the psychology of how the Gospels are read and portrayed.

TFP Editor: How do you anticipate the fields of biblical studies and psychology growing in the next ten years?

Watts: There has been a marked growth of interest in recent years, signaled, for example, by Wayne Rollins’ 1999 book, Soul and Psyche: The Bible in Psychological Perspective. So far, psychological approaches to the Bible have lagged behind social science approaches, but I think that will catch up over the next ten years.

TFP Editor: What other research projects is your group at Cambridge undertaking?

Watts: Religious violence: recruitment and de-radicalization; experimental investigation of religious cognition; investigating atheism dialogue between theology and psychology; and the intellectual history of natural theology.

AAR/SBL Annual Meeting: Wrap Up

November 27, 2007

Staff at the Press is now back in the office after AAR/SBL Annual Meeting in San Diego. The exhibit was a great success for us, as we not only sold many of our books but had the opportunity to see many of our authors and meet many of our readers. Those who stopped by our booth were interested in a range of our books, with particular interest in new fall 2007 books, such as Divine Action by Keith Ward, The Altruistic Species by Andrew Michael Flesher and Daniel L. Worthen, The Altruism Reader compiled and edited by Thomas Jay Oord, Jesus and Psychology edited by Fraser Watts, and The Historicity of Nature by Wolfhart Pannenberg, compiled and edited by Niels Henrik Gregersen.

There seemed to be great concern about the split of the AAR and SBL annual meetings, and the Press will attend both meetings next year to determine our future attendance at each meeting.

Sir John Templeton: Thanksgiving

November 14, 2007

The founder of Templeton Foundation Press, Sir John Templeton, strongly believes that thanksgiving should be practiced every day. As our annual observance of Thanksgiving draws closer, I share with you Sir John’s words about thanksgiving from his book The Humble Approach:

“Thanksgiving opens the door to spiritual growth. If there is any day in our life which is not thanksgiving day, then we are not fully alive. Counting our blessings attracts blessings. Counting our blessings each morning starts a day full of blessings. Thanksgiving brings God’s bounty. From gratitude comes riches—from complaints poverty. Thankfulness opens the door to happiness. Thanksgiving causes giving. Thanksgiving puts our mind in tune with the Infinite. Continual gratitude dissolves our worries.”
