“What Would John Templeton Say?” Hosts Spring Blog Contest

March 2, 2010

What Would John Templeton Say? was created to function as a web resource to serve as a hub for sharing financial wisdom from John Marks Templeton (1912-2008), Money magazine’s 1999 as the “twentieth century’s greatest stock picker.”

In the last few months, [What Would John Templeton Say?] has posted excerpts from Sir John Templeton’s speech, “The Religious Foundation of Liberty and Enterprise,” which he delivered to Buena Vista College in 1993. This speech outlined five economic vices (envy, greed, pride, intolerance, moral relativism) and five economic virtues (cooperation, creativity, charity, adaptability, and integrity).

To continue our conversation on these economic virtues and vices, we are sponsoring a blog contest challenging those who maintain personal or professional blogs to answer the following question for a chance to win $500:

Taking this lecture into account, which vice, as described by Templeton, is most responsible for the recent economic downturn? Which of his five virtues is the most important to the economy’s rebound?

Contest entries must be submitted to this site by April 15, 2010.

The Battle Royale of Publishing Formats: Electronic vs. Audio vs. Print

July 14, 2009

The Chronicle Review, which is the section of The Chronicle of Higher Education that focuses on all things book-related, ran an intriguing feature article last month. The article, titled “Reading Dickens Four Ways,” examined the novel Little Dorritt through four different text formats. The  author explains her study thusly:

Do I love books or do I love reading?

When my book group picked Little Dorrit, I found myself asking that question.

…I went automatically to my old Penguin paperback, standing ready on the shelf. Never mind its familiar and friendly orange spine — I hesitated. Maybe it would make sense to read the book on the Kindle that my husband bought me last year. Then again, for my daily Manhattan life, I love audiobooks, the best choice for crowded public transportation and a wonderful companion for walking. And now that I use an iPhone, I have been surprised by the ease of reading its crisp, bright screen.

So, between the print edition, the audiobook, the Kindle, and the iPhone, who wins? As it turns out, the answer isn’t so simple. Click here to head over to the full article. If you’re at all interested in the future of publishing, it’s well worth a read.

AAR/SBL Annual Meeting: Wrap Up

November 27, 2007

Staff at the Press is now back in the office after AAR/SBL Annual Meeting in San Diego. The exhibit was a great success for us, as we not only sold many of our books but had the opportunity to see many of our authors and meet many of our readers. Those who stopped by our booth were interested in a range of our books, with particular interest in new fall 2007 books, such as Divine Action by Keith Ward, The Altruistic Species by Andrew Michael Flesher and Daniel L. Worthen, The Altruism Reader compiled and edited by Thomas Jay Oord, Jesus and Psychology edited by Fraser Watts, and The Historicity of Nature by Wolfhart Pannenberg, compiled and edited by Niels Henrik Gregersen.

There seemed to be great concern about the split of the AAR and SBL annual meetings, and the Press will attend both meetings next year to determine our future attendance at each meeting.

Sir John Templeton: Thanksgiving

November 14, 2007

The founder of Templeton Foundation Press, Sir John Templeton, strongly believes that thanksgiving should be practiced every day. As our annual observance of Thanksgiving draws closer, I share with you Sir John’s words about thanksgiving from his book The Humble Approach:

“Thanksgiving opens the door to spiritual growth. If there is any day in our life which is not thanksgiving day, then we are not fully alive. Counting our blessings attracts blessings. Counting our blessings each morning starts a day full of blessings. Thanksgiving brings God’s bounty. From gratitude comes riches—from complaints poverty. Thankfulness opens the door to happiness. Thanksgiving causes giving. Thanksgiving puts our mind in tune with the Infinite. Continual gratitude dissolves our worries.”
